In the wake of partition of the country in 1947 millions of persons displaced from the territories comprising the newly set up state of Pakistan, migrated to India in a miserable plight and the G.O.I and the State Government had to face an unprecedented and gigantic task of rehabilitating those unfortunate victims of partition, With that aim in view, the then Govt of Patiala & East Punjab State Union (PEPSU) promulgated ‘The Rajpura Development Ordinance, 2006 on April, 1949, for the purpose of setting up Townships to provide shelter etc. to the displaced persons. The Ordinance was later repealed and ultimately ‘The Pepsu Townships Development Board Act, 1954 (No. 2of 1955) came into exist, under which two Townships: One at Rajpura and the other at Tripuri, on the out-skirts of Patiala near Dukh Niwaran Sahib, were set up for rehabilitating the non-Punjabi displaced persons from Bahawalpur State. For the development of these Townships G.O.I advanced a loan of Rs. 1,60,45,850/- to the Pepsu townships Development Board through the State Government. This loan has since been repaid in full. In both these Towns following land was acquired to settle the displaced persons and for other matters connected with them:-
Rajpura : 1165 Acre 1 Kanal 14 Marla
Tripari (Patiala) : 109 Acre 17 Marla
In compliance with the directions of the G.O.I prior to 1987, these lands were treated as ‘Compensation Pool’ and till then properties were disposed off under Displaced Persons (C & R) Act 1954 and Displaced Persons (C & R) Rules 1955. The State Government notified rules in 2003 namely ‘The Pepsu Townships Development Board Disposal of Property Rules 2003’ for the disposal of remaining properties of the Board. Accordingly, the properties are being sold out and development in these towns is being carried out according to the decision taken by the Board. The detail of the remaining properties of the Board is as under:-
Rajpura : 64 Acre 00 Kanal 07 Marla
Tripari (Patiala) : 01 Kanal 11 Marla
